The 6 Principles of Modern Data Architecture

Posted by Joshua Klahr on Jan 19, 2018

A version of this article originally appeared on the Cloudera VISION blog.

One of my favorite parts of my role is that I get to spend time with customers and prospects, learning what’s important to them as they move to a modern data architecture. Lately, a consistent set of six themes has emerged during these discussions. The themes span industries, use cases and geographies, and I’ve come to think of them as the key principles underlying an enterprise data architecture.

Whether you’re responsible for data, systems, analysis, strategy or results, you can use these principles to help you navigate the fast-paced modern world of data and decisions. Think of them as the foundation for data architecture that will allow your business to run at an optimized level today, and into the future.

Big Data: The Unknown Unknowns

Posted by Bruno Aziza on Jun 22, 2017

Industry leaders know that their challenges with data analytics are spread across 4 areas: confirmation (‘the things they know they know’); intuition (‘the things they don’t know they know’); inspection (‘the things they know they don’t know’); and revelation (‘the things they don’t know they don’t know).

This last category is often the most tragic for organizations.  Luckily, we now have helpful resources from Tom Davenport's latest webinar on Data Strategy to key research data points on chief data executive's priorities.

Data is NOT the New Oil...

Posted by Bruno Aziza on Jun 7, 2017

Over the years, Big Data pundits have come up with great one-liners to highlight the importance of data. "Data is the new gold" or "Data is the new bacon" are examples of such analogies.  They are all great but there is one in particular that's been bothering me lately.  If you're coming to next week's DataWorks event, be sure to attend the AtScale keynote on Wednesday to find out which one it is and why.

Do You Need A [New] Data Strategy?

Posted by Bruno Aziza on May 1, 2017

This past week, Tom Davenport, of the "Competing on Analytics" fame published an HBR article that he could have named:  "What They Don't Teach You at Harvard Business School: Big Data Edition".  The piece follows a long list of mainstream articles that have attempted to highlight the shortcomings of "Old School Data Strategy". Here is what you might have missed and why it could matter to your company and career.

BIG BI: Data isn’t a Process. It’s an Asset.

Posted by Neil Raden on Oct 6, 2016

Data. It isn't a process. It's an asset.

Welcome to the 1st in a series of 8 blogs, where I will dive-in to separate and clarify both concepts and relationships across Business Intelligence and its active component OLAP,  predecessor technologies, and data. OLAP in particular has suffered from issues of scale and speed, but the need for this type of analysis is greater than ever. And while, the industry of analytics has been overrun with big data and data science, there is a general lack of understanding that previous drawbacks of BI and OLAP have been solved with the new architecture of big data, Hadoop/Spark and Cloud.

Join me as I uncover both the vital need for multi-dimensional analysis and the vastly improved capabilities that exist for big, nae massive, data of today. I believe you will find some rather interesting surprises.

5 Things You May Not Know About Hadoop

Posted by Bruno Aziza on Jul 15, 2015

Since its unveiling in 2005, Hadoop has steadily become more prominent in the world of big data storage and retrieval. Hadoop got its name from an elephant toy owned by the inventor's son, and truthfully, it is not a stretch to see Hadoop as the "elephant" of all data processing and storage solutions, in that it is capable of storing and retrieving huge amounts of data in what seems like the blink of an eye.
